9/10 Mike Staff review, 24 May 2013

Currently riding high on a wave of critical and public acclaim, Leeds’ psychedelic heroes Hookworms return this week with a 7” on Too Pure featuring two brand new cuts not included on their ‘Pearl Mystic’ LP, which is a great album but lacking in obvious singles due to the drawn-out nature of their compositions.

‘Radio Tokyo’, then, is a pounding and concise bit of pop with call and response vocals, a catchy little unison riff on organ and guitar, and a shuddering vibrato guitar buzzing along to give it a fizzing sense of energy. Great stuff! Flip it and ‘On Returning’ is a more downbeat number with the Farfisa organ taking a more prominent role over a languid drum groove while MJ gets tape-echo-happy with his vocals. Halfway through it bursts into a squall of clanging guitars and then eases off again for another run through the verse. Two more winners from your new favourite band!
