8/10 Mike Staff review, 17 April 2013

With his debut album on the verge of release, the Child of Lov drops this double A side 10” this week to get your mouths watering. On the A side we’ve got ‘Fly’, a brilliant bit of wonky soul-pop which cheekily lifts the template of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ and adorns it with alien multi-tracked vocals which complement the bright synths and fat bass for a woozy, blurred pop song like Hype Williams paying tribute to ‘80s funk-soul acts like Rick James and Prince.

On the other side there’s ‘Give Me’, with a robotic digi-hop beat I can imagine someone like RZA singing over, but with more Rick James-esque multitracked crooning. It really, really reminds me of that Mighty Boosh song where they parodied Rick James with Old Gregg’s ‘Love Games’ song. It’s a lot like that. So basically we’ve got two songs here which sound massively like two specific other songs. Apart from being able to tell which songs he's pinched I actually like it quite a bit though, plus we spun his album the other day and it’s not bad at all.
