The sleeve of this record looks pretty evil, so I figured it was going to be a bit of a bad-vibes metal band or something, but that’s not the case as I put the disc on the player. In fact Team Spirit are peddling a relentlessly upbeat take on that late ‘90s pop-rock sound, nice chunky rhythm section, Santiago-style guitars, fruity Hammond and urgent, yelpy vocals like Shakin’ Stevens crossed with Lex from Johnny Foreigner.
Actually it’s pretty fun, especially on a sunny day like we’re having, but it’s hard to escape the ‘90s spectres of bands like The Beekeepers and Radish and the Wildhearts. It’s kind of obnoxious and cheeseball but really tuneful and brash and if you’re nostalgic for those heady days then you might well enjoy this.
