ADR some of you may recall was the chap responsible for the inaugural release on the Public Information label. Real name Aaron David Ross, he is also half of Gatekeeper. I was somewhat taken by surprise when the needle first hit the groove as I really wasn’t expecting the laidback funky hip-hop vibes of opener ‘Casual Friday’. A track that wouldn’t be out of place on Ninja Tune or a Red Snapper record from days gone by. Then the chilled drum and bass type jazzy groove of ‘Slush Fund’ continues to defy my expectations.
‘Sumo’ is a playful slab of nostalgic, acidic breakbeat driven electronica. Meanwhile ‘What It Takes’ is comprised of stuttering drums, female vocal and oldskool bleeps. ‘Social Studies’ is a darker more seedy cut with some 303 action. ‘Home Improvement’ trudges along like yee good olde Meat Beat Manifesto. Even though there’s plenty of contemporary production tricks overall I can’t help but feel it’s a bit dated. Whether the intention is retro I’ve no idea.
