9/10 Andrew Hickford Customer review, 1st May 2014

There is a temptation to be dubious about the seemingly endless series of 'newly discovered' Dilla tracks, surely we should be hearing the splintering of the barrel as we get to discarded 5 second loops that he was throwing out as nothing more than studio messing? With a lesser producer, then yes, we would be on pretty thin gruel by now, if we were not already waaaay past being interested. However, this is Dilla. If anyone knew how to flip a sample, it was he. Now, this isn't something you'll necessarily put on and party to. These aren't fully formed tracks, so don't be expecting something like a Slum Village LP. Similarly its not as cohesive as Donuts, but then again this wasn't put together originally as a fully formed release. What we do have though is a series of sketches by a producer on top of his game. If we are talking art, then no one sniffs at the sketches of Da Vinci or Picasso do they? This provides a set of intriguing beats, loops, rough drafts & 3/4 formed ideas that could easily have been developed into fully formed hip hop classics. 9/10 for a rough draft seems generous, however having played this quite a few times since purchase I feel that this album presents both an insight into a masters craft and an absorbing, intriguing as well as funky, head nodding and yes... banging LP. Now that doesn't sound bad for the cost of half a dozen krispy kreme's and it is certainly better for the hips.
