Well, this is one of the most extravagantly-packaged albums I’ve come across in a while! Enclosed within a branded wooden box from Alt. Vinyl we have two LPs (one of which is etched on one side), a CDr and a colour printed 12x12 insert. It looks really classy and weighs quite a lot. On the vinyl itself, Atom Earth Mother, aka one half of Zoviet France, offers a lengthy collection of moody ambient pieces inspired by ancient and enigmatic rock art.

The pieces are comprised of distant rumbles, sleepily paced synth drones, understated field recordings and occasional vocals, processed to a weary ethereal smudge over the undulating synth hum. Somewhat sadly, the press release claims that this album “started out as homage to the Earth Mother” but “soon became a deeply personal story documenting the end of a love affair and the emotional aftermath” which is always a stinger. Certainly a lot of the material here is somewhat troubled and haunted, like a cleaner, sparser Decimus or a smooth and ghostly take on Nate Young’s solo synthmares refracted through the cracked-glass filter of slow-burning darksmiths like Scissors & Sellotape or Deathprod. Patiently paced, mournful dark ambience for those nights when you’re keeping yourself awake at night wondering where your life went wrong.
