8/10 Ant Staff review, 11 April 2013

Evan Caminiti and Jon Porras are pretty reliable chaps, now five albums strong as a duo they’ve yet to unleash a turkey. Yes, the title is indeed a reference to the fact that this is their fifth album and sadly not a wink to the popular 1980s television series where people would rip off their skin to reveal alien/reptilian faces. Like much of the US underground these days the guys have picked up a synthesizer or two, here augmenting the very occasional dusty Americana slow-mo guitar twanging with rich, celestial synth washes and ghostly textures. All the widescreen epic drama and tension of previous albums seems to become more refined with each release from these guys. ‘The Long Release’ has some really fine sounding organ. Let’s face it if you’re interested in this record then after four previous records you’ll know the score, I say it everytime but they really do manage to balance the dark atmospherics with lighter elements expertly.

After the short but sweet ‘Pacific Isolation’ opening the second side ‘The Opulent Decline’ then occupies almost the entire side. Beginning quietly and restrained, slowly and gently building to a powerful and gripping ride that’s very cinematic in scope. Would love to here these guys knock out a soundtrack or two. Wax comes in heavy duty gatefold board sleeve with download code because Thrill Jockey know you can’t listen to records on the bus. They care - bless ‘em.
