Toronto duo North Atlantic Drift make a warm and unsurprisingly drifty sound on this new CD on Sound In Silence, combining elements of melodic drone with electronic and post-rock textures for a gently tuneful and relaxing collection. Guitar shimmers and gliding synths are buffeted by hazy waves of whooshing static, while elsewhere cinematic piano carves an aching percussive reverie.
Despite the high drone factor it’s relentlessly melodic and the debts to Eno and Stars Of The Lid mentioned in the press release are certainly evident, not that that’s a bad thing. It’s also bringing to mind some of the more tentative of the post-rock movement like Stafraenn Hakon and even Sigur Ros, tugging heartstrings with indecipherable, womby sheets of welcoming, nostalgic tone swells laced with familiar sounds and intuitive melodies. In ‘Scholars Of Time Travel (part 2)’ they really open the sound up for a neoclassical-tinged bit of soundtracky evocative gorgeousness which brings to mind Johann Johannsson’s lovely last one ‘Copenhagen Dreams’. This is wonderfully soothing stuff.
