8/10 Ian Staff review, 05 June 2013

Brand new full length from amazing Dutch lutenist Jozef Van Wissem, after previous collaborations with Jim Jarmusch this latest on Important Records sees Van Wissem going completely solo so to speak. This album is business as usual with layers of melodic lute fingerpicking interplay, if played on acoustic guitar this would probably go unnoticed but JVW’s passion and soul just seems to flow out of this historic instrument.

‘Nihil Obstat’ is a record that is strangely hypnotic in its minimalism and gracefulness and proves that Wissem is a leader in his field, performed on his custom black lute built by Michael Schreiner, the LP is limited to 800 and the CD (which I’m reviewing from) claims to have an extended 11 minutes, but I can’t find them for the life of me. The track list is the same as the vinyl. What’s here is very good but it is a little short, more of a mini-album.
