- Shapwick by Jon Brooks

‘Shapwick’ is an album created by The Advisory Circle/Ghost Box Records composer Jon Brooks based on an imaginary impression of a quaint little village in Somerset. Brooks tells of an unplanned car journey one autumn evening through the village and the image created by the trees! The album begins with a melodic piece that has a very olde worlde type feel to it and you can almost believe you’re driving through the village yourself, images of old craft shops and dovecotes surrounded by award winning blooms. There are moments of dark electronica in there that reveal a more sinister side to this sleepy little village maybe, side A ends with a creepy music box tune that is slightly unnerving!
Side B begins with a piece that has elements of prog/folk and a warped chiming clock-like sound. There are a lot of almost childlike whimsical tunes on the album, like vintage children’s TV themes but these are interspersed with dark ghostly piano pieces that conjure up images of untold secrets behind twitching curtains! Shapwick is an interesting story of a village steeped in history and a darkness that only the “locals” could possibly tell you about!
