Russian label Sealt have sent us a couple of their very limited LPs this week, and I’ve gravitated towards this one because I have a certain affinity with owls and the front cover is a bleedin’ great owl face. It’s in an edition of just 100 in fancy wood-bound sleeves and is the work of Alexander Ananiev of Sleepy Town Manufacture, who also have an excellent LP on this label.
What’s on the record itself is a collection of fun and accessible electronica with a slight late ‘90s sound, mixing chillout house, glitchy acid energy and ambient washes of sound for a fizzing cinematic chill ride which brings to mind the playful easygoing house styles of early Four Tet with a seam of pulsating techno darkness. Ceephax’s new soundtrack-inspired opus springs to mind, but imagine if he’d gone in a Vangelis/Tangerine Dream direction instead of going full Carpenter. It’s going down real smooth.
