Vinyl LP £13.99 RLP3142
LP on Rune Grammofon.
Norwegian experimental pop crooner Jenny Hval is one of the artists to drop a new long player on Norway’s iconic Rune Grammofon imprint this week. Produced by John Parish and featuring an impressive cast including strings arranged by Ole-Henrik Moe, it’s a classy bit of adult contemporary pop which falls somewhere between popular label-mate Susanna and regular John Parish collaborator PJ Harvey, with touches of the clear and skeletal post-pop of Niki & The Dove and the organic tumbledown beauty of the Notwist.
It’s a brittle and understated pop aesthetic which is totally engaging thanks to arresting melodies and a captivating delivery, and I keep finding myself listening intently with a blank expression when I’m supposed to be writing a review. Some tracks, like ‘Mephisto In The Water’, remind our Phil of a sleepy version of The Knife, which I can hear. This is really beautiful stuff, an unusual and quite timeless sounding collection of songs.
