Here’s a 45rpm LP from French-stationed Swedes Black Bug on the ever-reliable HoZac, ripping through 11 tracks of coldwave-influenced post-punk darkness drenched in chilly Carpenter synths and grungy distortion. Opener ‘You Scream’ sounds like a harder, faster take on Total Control, but then the second track opens with a pure horror-synth lick that takes things in a whole nother direction.
Over the course of the album, Total Control continue springing to mind, but also the likes of Teenage Panzerkorps/Horrid Red and even goth-influenced post-punkers like Iceage or late greats like Tales of Terror or Ink & Dagger. For a record so unremittingly bleak there’s a real shuddering synthpunk energy to it which has kept my interest for the duration of the record. Good stuff.
