In Zaire are back to blur the lines between ritualistic psych rock and mystical free chunter on this newest LP ‘White Sun Black Sun’, with each track taking the name of a celestial body - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. It’s really well done, initially a little murky sounding like Carlton Melton but once you ease yourself into their soundworld it’s intense, with a cosmic restraint running through the tracks which tempers the Bo Ningen-ish psych abandon.

An instant highlight for me is ‘Mercury’ which opens the second side, a monstrous CAVE-esque kraut psych jam with gliding Carpenter-inspired and a chugging, propulsive rhythm, contrasting effectively with the spaced-out skronk of the following track ‘Jupiter’ and then the almighty White Hills-esque riff-a-thon that is ‘Venus’ which is another instant highlight. I don’t have a lot of time to talk about this one but if you’re into space rock like White Hills, Gnod, CAVE, Sylvester Anfang or The Cosmic Dead, you should buy this because these guys’ take on the genre has a rare combination of finesse and full-throttle bombast. Really ace.
