Well liked Leeds power popsters Post War Glamour Girls are back this week with a 7” on very thick vinyl featuring new tracks ‘Jazz Funeral’ and ‘Johnny and Mary’. The A side is a dark, chiming rock anthem with a vocal delivery which is incredibly reminiscent of ‘Henry’s Dream’-era Nick Cave. At the start of the song I half-expected them to burst into ‘Red Right Hand’ but it never came. Solid song but the Cave similarity is strong enough to be slightly distracting.

Flip it and ‘Johnny and Mary’ has a nice chugging groove which reminds me a little of Cinerama or post-comeback Wedding Present, with a catchy descending melody which I could swear is cribbed off someone else...but who? Perhaps it’s just so catchy I think I’ve heard it before. Oh wait, I just checked the press release and it’s a Robert Palmer cover, that clears that up! Comes with a handwritten postcard which is a nice touch and must’ve taken them bloody ages!
