Here’s the second CD from Brooklyn’s Shawn Marie Westendorf, aka Creature Breath, in another of those limited numbered editions from Reverb Worship. This one comes with an old cigarette card mounted on the front of the sleeve which is a nice touch. Once again here, Ms Breath is offering a selection of warm, sparely arranged neofolk with varied instrumentation (guitar is dominant but there are all sorts of subtle touches of xylophone, clarinet, etc), silky vocals and a sultry, pop-inflected delivery which is really engaging and likeable.
In my review of her previous CD I compared Westendorf to fellow Brooklynite Heidi Harris (who recorded and mixed both Creature Breath albums), Laura Gibson and Odessa Chen, and not to be lazy or anything but listening to this new one that still seems like a valid comparison. Early Gemma Hayes is springing to mind in places too, but this is much subtler, more ethereal and less pop. It’s really smooth, soulful, late-night folkiness with delicately strummed acoustic instruments and instantly familiar-sounding melodies.
