- Dudes Vs Bad Dudes by Cowtown

Now on their third long-player, Cowtown are increasingly becoming Leeds’s worst-kept secret, earning plaudits from an endless stream of touring visitors but rarely making it out of our “fair” city. Hopefully that’s set to change with the release of ‘Dudes vs Bad Dudes’, where they’ve honed their DEVO-meets-Deerhoof party time post-punk into ten punchy and addictively catchy songs ably recorded by none other than Hookworm MJ, from whose band you may recognise Cowtown frontman JN. His trademark tape echo is in evidence here on tracks like ‘No Hum Drum’. ‘Ski School’’s skeletal post-punk-funk rhythms are totally leg-shaking and other highlights come by way of the pulsating new wave synthpop of ‘Nightbeats’ and one-note dancefloor-filler ‘Monotone Face’.
The Cowtown sound is based around hard and bouncy drums and simple, wonky melodies shared between Jon’s guitar and Hilary’s microKORG while they take turns on the vocals. The bright and brash tones could prove irritating in other hands, but Cowtown have a great knack for writing powerful pop songs with the Talking Heads’ danceable cool and DEVO’s wryly misanthropic optimism, and repackaging it in their own quirky style with sharp arrangements, urgent vocals and measured, creative drumming. Awesome pics of C-No getting high on the sleeve too, and just in time for summer! Only 250 copies of this future classic pressed so get involved while you can!
