Now this compilation is really warming me up during yet another freezing day on old blighty. Before grime, jungle, dubstep, garage, etc, the youth of London were creating some marvellous sounds, specifically the sounds of young black London, which is the focus of these expertly compiled sets from Honest Jon’s who are of course based in London so they’re really documenting local history. And what a rich history it is; West Indian and African immigrants brought with them the gift of music and a real sense of joy and celebration penetrates all of these tracks despite them being created in more difficult times.

Latin, jazz, calypso and Highlife are all adequately represented across two double LP volumes and a 2CD set all complete with lovely photographs, liner notes and original label artwork. For any noobs they’re the perfect place to begin exploring artists such as Lord Beginner, Lord Invader, Mighty Terror, The Quavers, West African Rhythm Brothers, Shake Keane and so on.
