- Into the night / Denim Patches by Blaenavon
Good grief, these bands just get younger and younger don’t they! Well the latest lot to try to follow in the footsteps of The Arctic Monkeys, Hanson, The Osmonds and The Jackson Five are the memorably-named Blaenavon, a trio with an average age of 16, who on ‘Into The Night’ mix Patrick Wolf-esque crooning with a natty little Vampire Weekend-ish cod-Afrobeat guitar hook and a nice bouncy drum groove.
Flip it and there’s ‘Denim Patches’, a brooding little ballad with fingerpicked guitar (kicking off into some National-esque moody rock pomp towards the end) which is pleasant if insubstantial. The delivery is tight and confident and restrained considering their age, although without that novel selling point I have to admit that, while I’ve heard much worse, this is pretty unremarkable indie fare.
The music certainly shows maturity beyond their years, however, and this is definitely promising stuff. As long as they don’t slide too far down that croony route into Geneva-ish bland and earnest territory I can see them coming up with something a bit special once they’ve found their sound. Maybe I’ve gone on about their age too much in this review, but I’ve also awarded them a bonus star for it so give me a break.
