- El Portal EP by Anthony Naples

We’ve got some very tasteful techno in this week from the mysterious Anthony Naples, last seen remixing Fourtet and this time showing off his minimal skills in a quartet of crisp, warm and restrained cuts that he made all by himself. The opening title track has womby synth drones and quite a lively beat, kind of a slight early Chicago house feel mixed with Germanic techno, while for the remainder of side A ‘Pueblo’ impresses with subtle beatmaking and a classy little jazz piano sample.
Over on the other side the EP’s lengthiest track ‘Busy Signal’ gets a bit experimental, with a simple kick and hi-hat rhythm with peculiarly shifting gates and filters and reverb and phasing, later joined by a simple three-note synth line and occasional cut-up vocal samples. It actually turns out much more dancefloor friendly than the intro suggests. Then to close ‘La Cuarta’ has a hypnotically shuddering cosmic synth loop and some slightly off-beat sub bumps. This second side seems much more experimental than the first but it’s all pretty interesting listening.
