I’m reliably informed that The Collectors’ 2006 album ‘Galapagos’ was really good, and our Phil and Brian were both big fans. I however didn’t start my Norman adventure until a good five years after that one so it went right under my radar at the time. They’ve got a new five song EP out - in fact their first new material since said album - so I’m getting a chance to catch up now.
On this CD they’ve collected five cinematic electro acoustic instrumentals which mix classic electronica with post-rock touches best exemplified by the middle track ‘Xem’, with krauty beats and a churning guitar drone offset by subtle electronic details, while ‘Carbon and Silver’ which follows it drops things down to some descending synth prettiness with some tasteful minimal Boards of Canada-esque analogue wibble which builds to an uplifting blur of sleepy swelling drone chords. Subtlety and detail is the name of the game and I get the impression this pair are real perfectionists - fans of understated melodic electronica like Plaid, BOC or even Fourtet’s more chilled moments should find plenty to enjoy here.
