I spent about half of this record thinking it was a classic piece of spiritual jazz from the ‘60s until I realised that the “1968” on the sleeve was just when the cover painting was made and it is in fact a new record. Yatha Bhuta Jazz Combo is the brainchild of Parisian producers Onra and Buddy Sativa.

What we get, though, will send you right back to the ‘60s. It’s spiritual jazz very much in the Sun Ra mould and with a bit of a loungey easy listening feel in places like Cal Tjader or someone like that. There’s even a bit where a female beat poet recites words over the top which is well Sun Ra. If you’re into this kind of gentle, restless puttering space-jazz uplift, you’ll be very excited to hear people still making records that sound like this.
