6/10 Clinton Staff review, 15 March 2013

Phil has just told me that the first rule of Norman Records was that we would never sell a Suede record. It’s fair to say that Phil isn’t keen on them, though it’s only because he dislikes the way they look, the noise they make, their singing and the words. Therefore me listening to this record in his presence is torture for the poor lad. Luckily I won’t have to play it for long as within three tracks you kind of get the idea. I’m not sure what long-term Suede fans will be expecting but what they get is what I probably imagine a record exec’s version of Suede circa 2013 would be.

All the elements are in place, the skirling guitars, the overblown arrangements, that Bowie-inflected lisp. It really is a “bigger” Suede though, hurtling off into U2 territory at times although the songwriting is very similar to their heyday - dark verses explode into big overblown choruses with melodies that are strong if not mindblowing. It’s all blasted out to the max, the mastering making it as loud as humanly possible. It actually sounds less like Suede than large swathes of the new David Bowie album but if you like Suede circa ‘Coming Up’ you are going to find much to enjoy.
