The Heliocentrics are a hard band to pin down, mixing all sorts of aspects of spiritual jazz, Afro-jazz, funk, krautrock and psychedelia into a restlessly inventive collection of free flowing grooves and tasty wah-guitar licks like a less prog-influenced Elephant9 or a swirl of Sun Ra-meets-Joe Meek weirdness, often with a cinematic feel that reminds me of that excellent recent 10” by The Kramford Look. Some of Shuggie Otis’s more experimental later work springs to mind too on listening to some of these passages. They’ve collaborated with all sorts from Mulatu Astatke to MF Doom in the past so you know these guys have some crazy chops.
At 20 tracks (to be fair several of these are interludes) it’s an epic journey and can seem somewhat disjointed in places, but the playful puttering rhythms and inventive melodic weirdness contained within is certainly worth a few listens to get your head around. It’s a soundtracky jazz-funk oddyssey.
8/10 Andrew Customer review, 23rd December 2014
Cosmic, tripped out psychedelic funk with just enough fuzz and hard enough drums to give it enough grit to stop it floating away into the cosmos. This is really what the Helio's do best. With some lengthier jams, short interludes and enough beats to make an aspiring DJ Shadow's mouth water, this is a must for the dusty funk collecting space freak in your life.
