Here’s the second 10” from Cloud Boat, who here play ‘Wanderlust’, a smooth and tasteful modern electronic soul with a roomy-sounding guitar, sparse beats, with cut-up samples and field recordings taking it into altogether unexpected places. In his review of their previous effort our Clint compared them to Balam Acab and James Blake, which I think is fair. It’s smoky late night soulpop with a wryly experimental edge to stop it from coming across too sterile. Pretty solid actually.

A somewhat throwaway second track ‘Drean’ forgoes the beats altogether for a delicate bit of fingerpicked sadness with mournful reverby vocals which drearily manages to stretch out 2 minutes 45 seconds to something which feels much longer. Then on the other side Old Apparatus take the scalpel to the EP’s lead track for a quivering chunk of drifty alien weirdness with heavy sub bass kicks building to an epic wash of reverb and drone swells that’s strangely overpowering whilst keeping traces of the silky sleekness of the original. So the story here is solid A side, drab B side, excellent remix.
