Currently on a one-band mission to rid the world of its vinyl resources, this is Guided By Voices’ billionth record this year. The A side has a lovely sound to it, strummed acoustic guitars and Robert Pollard’s slightly distorted voice. It’s also that rare thing, a Pollard/Sprout co-write. The only problem is that even on my third time round playing it I can’t detect too much of a tune. It’s nice though, as always.

Tobin Sprout has been writing some of the better GBV tunes of late and he has another on the flip, a typically sweet acoustic strum along. He has this trick, his songs don’t bother with second verses, they just have a first verse then repeat the chorus to the end. He did it the other week and now he’s at it again and darn me it works. The final Robert Pollard penned (and I use the term loosely) ‘tune’, is a horrid unlistenable squelch but we all know that the words ‘cutting room floor’ don’t exist in the GBV vocabulary.
