It’s a last minute rush this week getting all the reviews done and I’ve only just found out the new album from A Hawk And A Hacksaw has come in so I thought I’d write a few words about it otherwise it’d get lost in the juggernaut of releases thrown at you by the music industry each week. I also get to wear Ian’s R2D2 headphones which is a bonus!
I’ve heard this a few times now so I’m reasonably familiar with it. I suspect if you’ve heard them before you know what to expect. This album is inspired by Paradjanov’s ‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’ (yeah me neither, but it’s a legendary film from 1964 by Russian director Sergey Paradjanov). So the 16 tracks on here feature seven originals along with nine tracks from Ukraine, Hungary and Romania.
The album consists of a reasonably upbeat lively set of olde folk tunes which will take you on a journey around eastern Europe, all of which sound like they should be played at weddings and funerals. You’re either gonna love this or hate this depending on what side of the fence you sit on but I like what these guys do and personally I think this is better than their last album but not quite as good as ‘Delivrance’ which is absolutely mint!
