Here’s this week’s Guided By Voices single, and it’s a good’un! Their output is notoriously mixed of course, but on ‘Trash Can Full Of Nails’ there’s a determined marching beat and a killer hook from the start as they stick to the simple, unaffected indiepop that they do best. There’s something majestic about the slow, stabbing verses which is weirdly at odds with a chorus which has more of a relaxed psych-pop kind of feel. It’s deliciously simple and yet always just beyond your grasp, strangely reminding me a little bit of Marnie Stern without the guitar heroics.

Flip it and there’s ‘Build A Bigger Iceberg’ (I’m enjoying the Titanic-meets-Jaws mental imagery this title conjures), a countrified Sprout effort which has all kinds of wonderful guitar sounds keeping it from being too pedestrian, but it’s all about the A side here really.
