Butthole Surfer Gibby Haynes is the latest character of historical interest to be resurrected by Third Man Records for this here 7” where he blasts his way through minor punk classic ‘Paul’s Not Home’ by NYHC originals Adrenalin OD (best known from the ‘New York Thrash’ comp which also featured early Beasties and Bad Brains), before throwing down a couple he wrote himself.

The cover’s good - fast and frantic and childish and obnoxious just like it’s meant to be, and then the other two tracks have a slightly countrified grunge pop thing going on that’s pretty entertaining too. ‘You Don’t Have To Be Smart’ is the pop song of the two, reminding me of ‘Backwater’-era Meat Puppets. It’s undeniably infectious and likeably off-kilter.

On the flip ‘Horse Named George’ is a harder rocking stomper which sounds like PW Long’s late, great Mule, all hard-blues grunge crunch and southern redneck drawl, and Jack White sticking to what he does best with some obnoxious noise guitar heroics towards the end which remind us why we all liked him in the first place. Not as bad as I feared it would be, in fact it’s quite good!
