For my second Icelandic record of the day we bring you multi-instrumentalist Olafur Arnalds although compared to most Icelandic ambient artists this is a big sound, a super orchestral beast with heavy glitch-hop beats like Craig Armstrong’s non soundtrack albums ‘The Space Between Us’ and ‘As If To Nothing’, there’s a string quartet here with the occasional piano, guitar and even a horn section, Opener ‘Sudden Throw’ builds with the full orchestra into a massive sound and then the title track is a beautiful deep love song with a vocal not unlike Antony Hegarty of Antony And The Johnsons fame!
Most of this album is very soundtrack-like in its feel, big concert hall sounds and soft weeping laments are all in the mix although it seems to lack the honesty of an artist like Craig Armstrong, it’s beautiful in its own special way. ‘Reclaim’ could almost be a pop song and a eurovision one at that, the more ambient moments feel a lot more polished to me like ’Hands Be Still’ and ‘Only The Winds’ and I feel like he should stick to more of these!
