9/10 Ant Staff review, 25 April 2013

This man is without question a true master of his artform. His minimalist / reductions of the delta blues are some of the most haunting music I think I’ve ever heard. It is incredible to think that back in the 70’s he chucked a load of his LP’s in a dumpster because nobody was buying them. It’s a different story these days as his vinyl releases tend not to hang about for too long and so this reissue of ‘The Departing Of A Dream’ is most welcome.

Originally released in 2002 it combines electric, acoustic and bass guitar with ambient hiss and subtle unidentifiable sounds. From beginning to end it’s a ghostly, spooked and somewhat dark listening experience. As with all Connor’s recording it’s immensely intimate, really pulling you inside his thoughts. Nobody makes the strings weep like this man. He makes his unique stripped back musical language sound so simple and yet incredibly moving. This was the first in what was apparently a tribute to Miles Davis, and you can certainly hear echoes of how Miles inspired him, possibly even his ghost lending some assistance. Edition of 700 copies with download code.
