7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 6th November 2014

The Fleur De Lys will make any self-respecting mod weak at the knees. They’re the band that the awful Ocean Colour Scene only wish they could have been. They have cool connections – Jimmy Page produced their first single, Jimi Hendrix played on one of their tracks and they were the first English band to sign for Atlantic Records.

“You’ve Got To Earn It” compiles all of their best songs “Hold On” is a fantastic slice of mid-sixties rock. “Mud In Your Eye” was their third single and borrows the first line from The Beatles’ “Ticket To Ride”. “Liar”, which is also one of their better songs changes the dynamic from the rocking, soulful sounds of previous singles, although has wailing lead guitar all the way through it.

“Brick By Brick” and “Stop Crossing That Bridge” are catchy, if slightly cheesy, and don’t have the guitar and organ led energy or edge of the earlier work. This is an interesting and worthwhile compilation of one of the 60s lesser known English bands.
