Everyones favorite mopey guitar plucker Mark “I’m a hit with the ladies because of my sad, sad songs and deep brown voice” Kozelek returns with another of his solo albums of covers. What do the following artists have in common? Bruno Mars, Danzig, Ted Nugent, The Misfits, Bad Brains, Sonny and Cher, Genesis and Godflesh? The answer is absolutely nothing apart from all being covered here by the sad one. He has a history of this type of thing with his albums of covers of AC/DC and Modest Mouse but has never attempted such a various artists covers record before.
Again, if you’d handed this to me as a new album of originals I would never have quibbled it. He twists and turns songs into his own unique shapes and the only hint that these are covers are a) lyrical content b) the faster paced efforts and c) the odd more pop orientated chorus which he tends not to bother with in his own compositions. Truth be told, I can’t get enough of Mark Kozelek, I still worship at the altar of his Sun Kil Moon ‘April’ and the unsurpassable ‘Admiral Fell Promises’ albums, obviously this doesn’t reach those dizzy heights and there is the odd voice strain here and there which is unlike him but he could pretty much sing anything by anyone and make it sounds like the saddest, most beautiful song ever written.
