8/10 Mike Staff review, 04 March 2013

Okay, fourth of these Famous Class splits up for review today is from Cass McCombs and White Magic. On McCombs’s side, the prolific and consistently decent singer-songwriter doles out a slow-burner called ‘If You Loved Me Before...’ with a similar vocal conceit to the Breeders’ ‘Do You Love Me Now’ but transformed into a doleful strum accompanied by nothing but a guitar and a sad little synth line towards the end.

On the other side White Magic, aka Mira Billotte, has a weird skeletal song where she croons delicately over a confident minimal piano line, kind of a mix between Nina Nastasia and Joni Mitchell, for an admittedly slightly lazy comparison. I’ve got a lot to do today, give me a break! It’s another good single.
