Sacramento funk punkers !!! (usually pronounced chk chk chk) offer up their fifth long player ‘Thr!!!er’, although previous efforts like ‘Louden Up Now’ and ‘Myth Takes’ seem to have a real energy about them, this feels a lot like the whole disco/post-punk thing has been done to death now. With British wannabes Friendly Fires making their way into the charts and playing pretty much every festival over the last few years, !!! seem to have been left behind. ‘Thr!!!er’ is no real change in direction, funky disco beats with a real DIY punk edge and elements of slinky house.

There’s a great ‘70s/’80s pop vibe here, tracks like ‘One Girl/One Boy’ has a super male female split vocal thing like a cooler Wham and ‘Fine Fine Fine’ is a bit of a Human League vs New Order mash-up.

The clonky keyboards make it sound a bit Daft Punk but a few of the tunes still hold true to their early sound like ‘Californiyeah’ with its A Certain Ratio-style indie groove. There’s no real departure in sound on this album but there’s no denying that !!! can still pull out some great tunes!
