Les Revenants Soundtrack by Mogwai

Les Revenants was the third soundtrack LP from Scottish post-rock titans Mogwai. It contained thirteen tracks of shorter more subdued material which lacked perhaps the explosive elements of their usual work but had a brooding intensity that perfectly soundtracked the successful TV series. Contains a cover of  Washington Phillips What Are They Doing in Heaven Today? - a rare cover song in the Mogwai canon.

Mogwai have been hard working boys recently, with the sounds of ‘Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will’ still ringing in our ears they’ve come back with this original soundtrack for French TV zombie fest ‘Les Revenants’!

All the usual ‘Gwai trademarks are here but this is a much more low key affair. I guess with a soundtrack the music has to take more of a back seat to the images onscreen. ‘Kill Jester’ though has Mogwai stamped all the way through it like a stick of Blackpool rock, Barry Burns takes the lead here with a beautiful heartbreaking piano riff and is followed up with a rumbling bassline on ‘This Messiah Needs Watching’, most of the album paints a pretty dark picture but there are a couple of uplifting moments like on ‘Special M’ which is more in line with their ‘Rock Action’ era!

Mogwai really seem to have found their feet after 20 odd years in the business, they sound like true pros on this album, the guitar work is very sparse with most of the music being more keyboard/piano led but this doesn’t spoil the overall feel, it’s interesting to note that most fans of Mogwai will probably listen to this having never seen the TV show but that’s the sign of a good soundtrack when it’s just as good as a stand-alone record, and this is certainly one of those!
