This has been a week laden with treats and this double LP of classic rockabilly from A-list crate diggers Keb Darge and Cut Chemist is the one that’s been making my day today. The tireless music historians are going head to head with one LP each to show off the cream of their respective collections when it comes to early rockabilly and jump blues, squeezing a massive 37 cuts onto this superb collection.

There are a handful of familiar names here - Chuck Berry and Link Wray & His Ray Men being notable household names on the tracklist - but the bulk of these cuts are super-obscure chunks of lively, danceable rock’n’roll that I’ve never encountered before. A particular stand-out on first listen is The Scarlets’ adrenalised ‘Stampede’, but the collection delivers nonstop quality countrified garage rock’n’roll that’ll serve you well for years.

It’s an amazing window into a formative era of what has become rock music, 12 bar hillbilly stomps delivered with style and aggression through crackling amplifiers, sometimes even verging on proto-punk. If you’re into awesome historical-interest reissues like you tend to see on labels like Finders Keepers or Sundazed or Soul Jazz, this is a total goldmine. Uniformly marvellous obscurities from the vaults of two proper obsessives.
