9/10 Mike Staff review, 04 February 2013

I got off my shiny metal arse and saw these Golden Grrrls (and boyyy) two or three days ago at the Leeds’s marvellous autonomous DIY social hub that is Wharf Chambers and they were totally charming, so it’s nice to have this eight song tape in today’s review pile so I can further get my ears around their lo-fi ‘60s-influenced pop stylings.

There’s eight songs on here and they’re all pretty muddily recorded and gross-sounding, but once you peer beyond the scuzz you’ll find perfect little pop songs with tasty little lead guitar lines, girl group-inspired harmonies and NZ-esque fuzzpop tones. This combination is reminding me of the early recordings from The Babies - totally snotty but also earnest and likeable, with a faith that their pure pop tunes will survive the ramshackle sonic mangling with their brightness intact. Which to be fair they do, and they make it look effortless
