Eat Skull are back with a new LP, and this time they’re on Woodsist! A pretty good fit for the hi-gain lo-fi experimental shamblepop veterans I think, and they spring out of the blocks with the ecstatic, shamelessly anthemic indie-fuzz romp ‘Space Academy’, a pop rush which wouldn’t sound out of place on a Guided By Voices or Apples In Stereo record, but before long things get a bit more spacey and experimental with the weirdly dubby ‘How Do I Know When To Say Goodnite?’ and the deliciously plodding fuzz ballad ‘Stupid Moon’.
The whole album has a strange air of euphoria about it, there are more sombre points which bring to mind Supreme Dicks or Microphones, maybe even some of the Flaming Lips’ more lo-fi stuff, and a shambly one with a synth that reminds me of the most recent Wet Hair album, but under all the murk and hiss these are pop songs, playful and catchy even at their weirdest. They’ve got a good sound. I liked this record yesterday and I’m liking it again today.
