Yo Yo Yo! I was most looking forward to this 7”. We got emailed about it, I got all excited, I got distracted by something shiny and then forgot about it, today it turns up and I’m excited again. It really happened just like that. This chap (Mark Brend) who’s an author and musician made a blinding CD on Second Language a coupla years ago. This is the first I’ve heard from him since and it features Jim ‘Belbury Poly’ Jupp for an imagined walk through 1930s London. Terribly mysterious!
It’s an odd release as the bulk of the music is an 11 minute piece split over two sides bookended by 2 short pieces. A haunting piano refrain is accompanied by cosmic spectral synths and ghostly voices of people who probably never existed saying words and that. It’s really quite brilliant. The flip sees the refrain continue albeit sounding different on a synth (I think). After a few minutes out of nowhere (and somewhat weirdly) come some freeform jazz style drums before it lunges back into the nostalgic spooky sounds.
Fans of Ghost Box and all things hauntological should check this out as it’s a cracking little single (it comes with a download too!). The two quirky short little tracks at the start and the end which I’ve not really mentioned are ace too. I’ll leave those as a surprise for you!
