6/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 23rd November 2014

Jim James’ debut solo album takes the changing sound of his band My Morning Jacket and runs with it, a bit less country-rock and more studio electronics. James played nearly all of the instruments apart from the drums and the strings. The album’s sound allows him to showcase his Carl Wilson-esque tones.

“State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” is a marvelous opener which builds slowly to end with 70s style cinematic bass and strings. It is the best track, which leaves the rest of the album as a bit of a disappointment. However, “On the Mother Again” and “Dear One” are good.

I think I prefer Jim James with a bit more rock behind him and perhaps he’ll get back to that now that this experiment is out of his system.
