So it’s 1982 again and Prince is ruling the pop charts? Well that’s according to Jamie Lidell’s latest album anyway, this is so retro it actually hurts and I’m not normally one for dancing but in the right frame of mind I might actually get up and shake my thang to opener ‘I’m Selfish’, we’re straight in with a dubstep meets Stevie Wonder type thing on ‘What A Shame’ and the funk is in full effect on ‘Do Yourself A Faver’!
I hate to admit it but this is all like a credible Justin Timberlake to me, pure pop all the way and this is one hundred times better than any of the tripe that passes for top 10 material these days, Jamie has a very polished soulful voice and with the Quincy Jones style production this is absolutely tip top pop that even Prince would be proud of!
‘Blaming Something’ is another squelchy chunk of funk thats getting a few feet tapping here in the office today and ‘You Know My Name’ is like something straight off ‘Sign O’ The Times’ or ‘1999’, pop gems like this only come along once in a blue moon like Gnarls Barkley or even Michael Jackson himself but when they do you just know it!
