Parts & Labor’s Dan Friel drops his first full-length on Thrill Jockey this week after a now-long-gone debut on Important, whirling us through a kaleidoscope of fractured pop from blown-out, broken and modified equipment, with what at first glance seems like intimidating scree quickly dropping its load of custom-builts pop hooks all over your face before you know what’s hit you. Think Black Dice and Dan Deacon playing Octopus Project songs, maybe?
There’s something quite joyous, unabashedly so, about the acid-fried melodies that keep piling up, like the body count at a giant stomping destructo-bot’s birthday party, at times it’s like Apparat Organ Quartet having a go with Fuck Buttons’ equipment. There’s places where the kind of modern-big-beat pacing reminds me of that ace recent Cherrystones album too, but hijacked by Kling Klang. If you like synths, big groovy tunes and fucked up noise, I don’t see why you won’t think this is brilliant!
Also, if you pre-order from us you go into the draw to win a unique and very rare music box handmade by Friel himself, which plays one of the tunes from the album. A true collectors’ item! I’ve got my pre-order in already, have you?
