- 8 Selections and Premonitions from the Tower, Vol.IV by CWK Joynes & The Restless Dead

The title suggests eight selections, alas we have only two but who is to worry when the music is of such quality. On the A side thumb pickin' guitarist Mr Joynes is joined (ha!) by increasingly respected folk drone experimenters Dead Rat Orchestra who have recently been on tour with Godspeed You! Black Emperor no less. Joynes plays some lovely rustic twanging on his guitar while the orchestra holler, squeak, screech their various violins, organs, harmoniums and human voices to give a ghostly evocative accompaniment. Tremendously affecting.
On the flip side Joynes leaves the Rat Orchestra behind and performs a lovely solo with the aid of the most unexpected of items - a tenor sax. Therefore, actually its not technically solo so I take that back. The sax flutters along in the background trying its best not to ruin the tune. Its quite a task as saxophone tends to ruin almost anything it is put with but the player keeps it on the leash and firmly within his grasp. A lovely piece and I possibly prefer this to the A side. Limited to just 350, will appeal to fans of Godspeed, Silver Mt Zion, Jack Rose, Michael Chapman to take a few names pluck them out of the air and hurl them at you.
