Ah York, Yorkshire’s walled City, the historic place I trail in from at the tail end of each week to bring you missives such as this. Its so great to see some great things going on in the city at the moment from the ace Please, Please You promoters, to The Inkwell record and book shop to Bad Paintings, this prolific little label going from strength to strength with a slew of releases on record and tape. Here, York’s very own noise poppers Fawn Spots are teamed up with the delightfully named Californians Cum Stain for an album of buzzsaw guitar pop.

Fawn Spots are doing their very best to negate any horrifying memories of Shed Seven being the city’s only export with their blitzkreig pop nodding heavily towards Husker Du, Buffalo Tom and (early) Foo Fighters. A highlight is ‘Watered Down’, the kind of tune that would not be out of place being played by grungy flaxen haired, plaid  shirted Americans circa 1992 and if you listen carefully,m the ghost of the young, angry Evan Dando is just in evidence. On the flip Cum Stains are a different proposition altogether with their quirky drum machine and fuzzy guitars they sound sorta something like The Ramones shot through with distorted 60’s girl group melodies.

Everything is distorted to within an inch of its life and percussion clanks away under the racket but the bubblegum melodies shine through the grit. Brattish, noisy and a heap of fun. All on very limited pink vinyl. Go seek.
