9/10 Phil Staff review, 21 February 2013

The gloved wonder Prurient has been busy impressing everyone everywhere lately with his Cold Cave and Vatican Shadow projects. I remember years ago his earlier records used to start wars when they were played in the office. Those harsh soundscapes were impenetrable!

Fortunately (for me anyway) his sound has calmed down over the years and although his music is still dark and punishing it’s really not quite as oppressive. ‘Through The Window’ is his first album for Blackest Ever Black who darked me out with the Raime album and they’re doing it all over again with this one!

The music on here is a lot like his Vatican Shadow project and I’d describe quite a few of the tracks as dark trance. Techno beats throb in the background with pulsing trance synth stabs over some dark oppressive noise. It’s weirdly euphoric! So on this three track album you get two tracks which fall into that category and one which is more industrial (and hard) sounding with intense beats and samples and lots of johnnyharshnoise in the background. As far as me and Prurient albums go this is the one I’ve enjoyed the most.
