Despite one stellar 2012 album in ‘Class Clown Spots a UFO’ and two half decent ones in the other two, Guided By Voices are severely in danger of testing my patience with their never ending series of 7”s. Last years 45s were notable for nothing other than the tracks taken off the albums, containing B sides knocked together in three seconds. This is an EP of all new songs and I’d love to report that it’s a slew of pop gems as on legendary 7” records such as ‘Get out of My Stations’ but alas it’s half heartedly cobbled together tripe.
Many of the tracks are towards unlistenable, ‘Standing in a Puddle of Flesh’ is particularly dreadful, Pollard sounds pissed, hammering away atonally on a horrible piano. Highlights, as with a lot of their recent work, are provided by Tobin Sprout, the sweet, short ‘Amanda Gray’ and the closing title track which rewards the listener with a hummable hook right at the end. Pollards highlight is probably ‘Pictures of The Man’ a dark swirling thing searching around for a tune but even then it’s nowhere near Guided By Voices at their best. Never write them off though, the scattershot approach still has plenty of life left in it and the upcoming album will probably see them back in my good books.
