8/10 Mike Staff review, 24 January 2013

Ah, this is blasting away the cobwebs. California X, confusingly actually from Amherst, Mass, rocking out with eight perfectly formed slabs of grungey power-pop with Dinosaur Jr riffs aplenty and a crisp hard-rocking early Foos feel with a bombastic, chunky delivery which brings to mind the most recent Torche LP, maybe crossed with something a bit scrappier and rawer like Pregnant or Mudhoney.

Grunge seems to have been making a bit of a comeback of late with bands like Cloud Nothings and Metz getting increasing amounts of attention for their well-observed reenactments of the visceral thrills of the early ‘90s, and this lot are making an admirable racket in much the same vein. Sure, it’s a bit cheeseball in places but the riffs keep on flying and it’s ballsy and sweaty and fun just like all those bands you liked when you were a teenager. Way better than the new Soundgarden album.
