“Once upon a time, there were mountains, a lake, a river and a waterfall in the forest.”
So begin the sleeve notes on this gorgeous twinkle fest of an album, and it tells a very pretty story indeed, a fairytale story of swans, young deer running through the forest, morning dew and memories of the wind, this is really lovely stuff full of playful vibraphone that even bands like Tortoise would be proud of but with a dreamlike ambience a lot like Susumu Yokota, it’s a fitting soundtrack to the unusual bout of snow we’re having at the moment and if snowflakes made music this is what it would sound like!
On a mostly sparse album there is the odd surprise in there, like on ‘A Story Of Forest’ where the twinkle is fleshed out with lush strings and on ‘River’ we’re treated to an almost percussive sound on the vibes but other than that it ebbs and flows like a waterfall, I absolutely love this, as soon as it’s finished I want to listen to it again, and again, and then some more, and then maybe go out and make a snowman!
