- Drums&Drums&Drums by Jeremy Greenspan / Laurie Spiegel
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 18 January 2013
I sit with my head gently lolling in my hands, the cold working its way into every pore. Outside the window the trees sway gently in the frozen breeze, as if waiting for something sinister to happen. But in my mind it already has. Words appear from the ether into my brain, “if I could turn back time, if I could find a way, I’d take back those words that hurt you, you’d stay”. Suddenly apropros of nothing I’m shocked out of my stupor, the drum beat kicks in, an electronic squelchy beat takes charge and we are in a rip roaring piece of electronica that is one part Georgio Moroder, one part Kraftwerk.
The history of the tune is that hip producer cat Jeremy Greenspan (Junior Boys) got obsessed with legendary electronic music experimentalist Laurie Spiegel, particularly the track ‘Drums’, and conceived a way of re-editing the track. The result is extremely impressive, I’ve not heard the original but this is a powerful piece, completely contemporary but with the feel of classic early electronic experimentation.
On the B side you get an original solo piece, it fits in nicely with the A side, some real heavy percussive elements and hard synths which cut through the mix like a knife. Impressive and completely absorbing, I feel like I’m getting my head battered in, deservedly, with heavy mallets.
